Benfica's three summer qualifying rounds

Benfica lost 2–1 at St. Gallen before winning the return 5–0, overturning the opening deficit to advance 6–2 on aggregate. The next tie against Hearts finished 7–2 overall, built on a 6–1 home win followed by a 1–1 draw in Edinburgh.

AGF were the play-off opponents. Benfica won both legs 3–1 to complete another 6–2 aggregate victory. All six matches belong in the Europa League season record, even though the league phase had not yet begun.

From Milan away to AZ at home

October brings Celtic and Omonia

Benfica open away to Milan on 16 September. Celtic visit on 15 October, followed by a trip to Omonia on 22 October. Lech Poznań are the home opponents on 5 November; Viktoria Plzeň host Benfica on 26 November.

OFI visit Benfica on 10 December. January pairs NEC away on the 21st with AZ at home on the 28th.

Cardozo, Luisão and Benfica's three finals

Benfica's UEFA Cup and Europa League archive includes finals in 1982/83, 2012/13 and 2013/14. The consecutive modern finals are one part of a longer competition history, rather than Benfica's only appearances in the deciding tie.

UEFA's historical player lists give Óscar Cardozo 22 goals and Luisão 58 appearances in the competition. Those are archive totals, not a current squad list or this season's scoring table. The summer results above tell a different story: six qualifying matches carried the 2026/27 team through to the Milan opener.
